Active Security Monitoring
Businesses that rely on publicly accessible digital infrastructure are vulnerable to external security threats and hacking attempts. While many companies trust virtual private networks (VPNs) on their firewalls to secure remote work, vulnerabilities can still exist in firewalls or in misconfigured devices. Publicly addressable systems, such as IP cameras and remote desktop servers, can have unpatched vulnerabilities for years, even after manufacturers release patches.
To address this concern, Aditum offers Active Security Monitoring for tenants with one or more static IP addresses. This service regularly scans all assigned IP addresses for vulnerabilities and sends alerts to tenants. Tenants can choose from 11 different categories of alerts to enable on their account. After a 24-48 hour activation period, any issues or alerts will be automatically sent to the tenant.
This service not only alerts tenants to open ports on their firewalls, but also scans for security vulnerabilities using information from banners, which are metadata about software running on a device. This metadata, which can be accessed by anyone with the right tools, typically includes information about the server software, options, and a welcome message.
This header data can reveal a wealth of information, including 46 potential security exploits on the tenant’s webserver (as of October 1, 2022). With Active Security Monitoring, tenants can be alerted to potential vulnerabilities and can choose to ignore specific alerts. Additionally, this service can be automatically billed to tenants through Aditum’s Direct Billing solution.
Security vulnerability information is obtained from industry-leading sources such as Shodan, ExploitDB, and Metasploit. By implementing Active Security Monitoring, businesses can proactively protect themselves against potential security threats.
For example, a tenant’s webserver may have a header that looks like this:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8
Server: Microsoft-IIS/10.0
X-Powered-By: PHP/7.3.1
Date: Sat, 1 Oct 2022 06:00:00 GMT
Content-Length: 94683
